Questionnaire 1 Results

We tried to get as even a split between male and females as possible, and with 37 to 43 we think we were successful with this. The majority of people we questioned are under the age of 18, because this is will be the main audience for our music video. The most popular genre was alternative rock, which is good because that's the genre of the song we would most like to do. Question 4 revealed that people regularly watch music videos, meaning that they will be familiar with genre conventions so we have to be sure that we meet them in our video. People also said they prefer the narrative format for videos, which is what we were already planning to do, and they also said that they think the alternative rock genre creates the best videos. Finally, we ask which of our initial five ideas was the best, and the overwhelming winner was idea 4, which we also feel is our best idea.

Questionnaire 1

We decided to split our questionnaire into two parts. First we designed this one which poses more vague questions, to get a general idea of how our audience thinks the music video should be shaped. When we receive the results from this questionnaire we'll design a second, more specific one and give it to the same sample of people so that the results are consistent.
The ideas we ask about in question seven refer to those we explored in our initial thoughts.

Audience Feedback on Our Song

To get an idea of whether or not people liked our song choice, we played it to several people and asked them all for feedback on it. Here are some quotes when we questioned people after they heard it:

"I like it and think it's really meaningful, but the song seems like it's too long for the video to remain interesting the whole time."

"I think it's an excellent choice, the lyrics could make for a really interesting video, though because it would be about religion you'd have to be careful to not offend."

"I think a video for this song could be done well, but it could get a bit boring if you don't do it carefully. The song is quite slow so the visuals need to be interesting."

"It's a good song but I don't think it would work for a performance video as it would get too boring, it would need to be narrative or conceptual."

Deciding Our Song

After conducting more research into the genre, we are still sticking to the decision we made at the end of our initial thoughts, which is to use 'If I Believe You' by The 1975.
The main reason for us using this is that the song has a very clear meaning which we can develop a strong narrative around. This narrative will meet genre requirements, as it approaches the serious subject matter that alternative rock music videos often delve into, and we will be able to include other codes and conventions of the genre. This is the song that we have the clearest idea for, so it makes the most sense for us to use it.
